A Rotary shoebox scheme has collected hundreds of boxes full of items which will give children, teenagers and the elderly in Eastern Europe a little festive cheer this Christmas.

The annual scheme, run locally by the Rotary Club of Grantham Kesteven, has been collecting boxes at the Journal, Grantham College and Cafe Rainbow at Grantham Tennis Club.

Many people have come forward to fill boxes with items such as toys, make-up, or household goods for the elderly.

Rotarian Tony Griffin said the Grantham scheme was doing well. He said: “The Rotary Club of Grantham Kesteven is delighted by the support that it has had from the Journal and its readers to enable the gift of a shoebox to be given to the many people in Eastern Europe who are less fortunate than ourselves. The gift maybe the first that they have received but, hopefully, not the last. The club is working with other clubs in neighbouring towns who are also involved in the scheme.”
