Newsagent worker Kirk Whitham admitted stealing hundreds of pounds worth of scratch cards from his employer.

Whitham, formerly of Albert Street in Grantham but now living in Harry Barber Close in Norwich, began working at Michelson News in Victoria Street in June and began stealing scratch cards almost immediately until colleagues became suspicious in August.

Jim Clare, prosecuting, said: “In his police interview he made full admissions to taking the scratch cards as soon as he was employed. He describes it as an addiction. His biggest win was £100.

“He said he is trying to get money together as he is getting married next year.”

Mr Clare told the court that Whitham had since split up from his fiancée.

The case was adjourned prior to sentencing as it is not yet clear how many scratch cards were stolen.

The prosecution case suggests £3,000 worth of scratch cards were taken while the defence believe the actual figure could be as low as £250 worth.

The case was adjourned until December 10. Whitham was given unconditional bail.
