The district council is considering raising its council tax charge for the next financial year by more than three and a half per cent.

South Kesteven District Council is one of 51 councils in the country with the lowest council tax in 2015/16. As a result the government has told them they can raise their Band D tax by £5 for the next financial year. This is a 3.58 per cent increase.

SKDC has the 38th lowest council tax for the current year. If it decides to increase its council tax charge by this amount it will receive an additional £227,000 in income.

Residents and businesses are being asked for their views on council tax levels for 2016/17 and the council’s Cabinet will be informed of the outcomes of the consultation at its meeting on February 8.

If the council wanted to raise its income tax by more than £5 for a Band D property, it would have to hold a referendum.
