Slideshow: Coun Mike Cook becomes the new Mayor of Grantham

The new Mayor of Grantham took up his post yesterday in the traditional ceremony held in the council offices.

Coun Mike Cook was ‘dragged’ from the council chamber in front of guests as part of the unique tradition played out in the mayor-making ceremony.

In his first speech as mayor, Coun Cook told guests the theme of his mayoral year would be respect among the many different nationalities now making up the town’s population.

He said his chosen charities for the year are On Your Bike, a community project which refurbishes old bicycles to sell on cheaply to needy families and jobseekers, and the Grantham branch of the Royal British Legion.

Outgoing Mayor Coun Linda Wootten presented the chains of office to Coun Cook.

Coun Cook suffered a heart attack in 2014 and had to step down as deputy mayor.
