Staff at Morrisons in Grantham to get “significant” pay rise

Scores of staff working at the Morrisons supermarket in Grantham are poised to get a “significant” pay rise.

It is estimated about 150 people who work at the supermarket in the Issac Newton Shopping Centre, in Wharf Road, will see their hourly wages rise by £1.37.

The increase has been secured in a national deal agreed by Morrisons’ directors and union representatives and applies to about 90,000 members of staff across more than 500 stores.

The increase will mean an investment by the company of £40 million and will take the hourly rate above the Living Wage Foundation rate.

A spokesman for the shopworkers’ union Usdaw said: “Usdaw has negotiated a significant pay rise for all retail staff in Morrisons, taking the basic rate to £8.20 from £6.83.

“The deal is subject to a ballot of members, with the union recommending acceptance.”

So long as the deal is approved in the ballot on November 12, the new rate will be paid from March 2016.

Joanne McGuinness, Usdaw’s national officer, said: “For some time we have been talking to the company about taking retail staff up to and beyond the Living Wage Foundation rate, currently set at £7.85 an hour.

“So I am delighted that we have agreed a rise that takes staff way past that to £8.20.

“The new consolidated hourly rate is now the highest of the big four supermarkets, which is paid every hour not just when staff work at times that attract premium pay.

“It is a big step forward, shows that the company are prepared to invest in the staff to help grow the business and I hope that the deal is supported by our members in the ballot.”

David Potts, chief executive of Morrisons, said: “We have been listening to our colleagues who told us they want their pay to be more competitive and simpler.

“By paying a significantly higher hourly rate, we are recognising the contribution of our excellent staff, who are so important to the revival of Morrisons.”

Mr Potts said Morrisons would make an extra investment of more than £40 million in the improved hourly pay rate. Supplements, such as a premium for working on Sunday, will also be simplified.
