Sunday afternoon church services are introduced in Grantham

Sunday services have been given a shake-up at churches in Grantham, aimed at families.

Rarely seen afternoon services have been introduced at St Anne’s Church, St John the Evangelist and the church based at the Earlesfield Youth Centre.

The Rev David Shenton, of St Anne’s, said: “We need to attract the missing generation in the Church of England, people in their 20s, 30s, 40s.

“It’s a user-friendly service with some good quality music, children’s activities and a break in opening the word of preaching.”

Afternoon services begin at 4pm, a time better suited to young families, said the Rev Shenton.

He added: “To get young families into church in the mornings is becoming more and more difficult. Shops are open, leisure activities happen on a Sunday now. It’s about reacting to changes in societal patterns.”

Sunday afternoon services will be held at St Anne’s on the first and fourth Sundays of each month, at Earlesfield Youth Centre on the second Sunday and at St John on the third Sunday. The Rev Shenton hopes also to encourage church-goers to attend services at other churches rather than not attend at all on the occasions their church has no service planned.
