A thug jailed for a violent midnight raid on a lone man in his Grantham home had his sentence dramatically slashed today.

Ryan Lenton, 22, of Spalding, was jailed for 10 years at Lincoln Crown Court in January after admitting robbery.

His accomplice, Thomas Brown, was also handed a 10-year term for the same offence.

Lenton and Brown stormed into Kevin Boyce’s home in Manthorpe Road, Grantham, after midnight last August.

The pair first knocked on Mr Boyce’s front door but then attacked him with a bottle when he let them in, said the judge.

Mr Boyce was battered to the head and body, London’s Appeal Court heard, and threatened with death if he went to the police.

The thugs snatched his bank card - also escaping with a laptop, TV, £60 in cash, a pair of shoes and a boomerang.

Mr Boyce suffered head injuries and bruising to the ribs and arms.

Judge Melbourne Inman QC said Lenton, of Fleet Road, Spalding, had presented “no real mitigation other than his guilty plea”.

But the judge, sitting with Lady Justice Rafferty and Mr Justice William Davis, added: “The violence here, although significant and serious, was not of a high level.”

Mr Boyce’s ordeal had been terrifying and lasted for at least an hour, but his injuries were “not the most serious in the context of cases of this nature”, he added.

“We are satisfied that the judge took too high a starting point,” he concluded, cutting Lenton’s sentence to seven and a half years.
