An accident involving a lorry, which has seen batteries and diesel spill out, has closed the A46 north of Bingham and is causing heavy traffic in the area.

The A46 has been closed northbound between the A6097 junction at Newton and the B6166 junction at Farndon.

This has resulted in congestion on the A52 westbound at the Saxondale Island.

Nottinghamshire Police are appealing for witnesses after the incident which took place at around 2.50am today.

The lorry shed its load and a second lorry suffered damage to its fuel tank after striking the resulting debris, causing diesel to be spilt onto the road. A car also suffered a puncture.

A large clean-up operation is underway in an effort to get the road re-opened.

Officers are keen to trace the driver of a black BMW which may have been involved in the incident but did not stop at the scene.

Anyone who witnessed what happened or has information on the black BMW is asked to call Nottinghamshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 37 of 28 January 2016.
