Video: Seventy Grantham cadets light 70 candles for Auschwitz commemoration

In an emotional ceremony on Tuesday night, 70 Grantham cadets lit 70 candles, bringing light into the darkness, to commemorate 70 years since the liberation of Auschwitz.

Youngsters from the Grantham RLC detachment and Grantham QRL detachment gathered following their usual weekly parade at the Prince William of Gloucester Barracks, on Somerby Hill.

The commemoration was organised by Anita Asken, Grantham RLC detachment commander. Anita, 44, said: “It was quite emotional. After we lit the candles we talked about Auschwitz and what the day was about. We talked about the fact the one million prisoners were gassed, and about what it’s like there now.”

The special event mirrored that which took place in Auschwitz.
