Rivercare volunteers put their new grappling hooks to good use they dredged the River Witham of fly-tipped rubbish at the weekend.
The new equipment brought to Grantham Rivercare by Andrew Walters, the Rivercare co-ordinator for Keep Britain Tidy and the volunteers quickly put the grappling hooks and new waders to good use.
It had only been a couple of months since the volunteers last tackled the river and yet they were still able to pull and incredible number of dumped items from within.
A total of sixteen sacks of rubbish filled mainly with bottles and cans were recovered, along with three shopping trolleys, an ironing board, a bike, two traffic cones and part of a bed.
Grantham Rivercare Leader John Knowles said: “It never ceases to amaze me the sort of things we find in the river and the effort it must take to get them there.
“What a good job we have Rivercare and so many caring people who are prepared to give up there time to keep our beautiful stretch of river in good shape.
“So well done everyone who turned out. I know that your efforts are much appreciated by local residents and visitors alike.”
