A FOUR-year nightmare could be over for a Grantham grandmother plagued by flooding.

Liz Smith, of Thames Road in Grantham, has fought flood water at her house for four years, seeing water pour in five times - most recently in October.

But this week, South Kesteven District Council arranged for a new flood defence system to be built on her back doorstep which should bring an end to her worries.

Liz said: “It’s wonderful. I haven’t been able to have peace of mind for years because of the flooding and I didn’t want to move because I like living in Thames Road.

“We can finally get carpets fitted inside without the fear of them being ruined again.”

A specialist company from Norwich called Flood Ark carried out the work installing the flood defences which can be easily removed and replaced when bad weather is expected.

Liz said work to fill in a problem manhole has also helped matters, while Anglian Water is planning further drainage work on the estate at a later date.

She had been complaining about the problems with flood waters plaguing her property for years but without making any progress.

Last October she wept as firefighters worked to bucket out water from her flooded home

However, she wants to thank Chris Maw at South Kesteven District Council for stepping in to help sort out the problem.

She said: “The problem was going on and on for years without anyone doing anything which would actually help until Chris stepped in.

“I can finally relax without having this hanging over me.”
