Well, I don’t know! I can’t believe it! The first real, helmeted police constable I’ve seen in Grantham for months and what was he doing?

Arresting the blatant daily drug dealers down our street?

Booking bad boy racers taking part in this as well as other crimes?

Handing out on-the-spot fines to other motoring offenders?

Preventing thoughtless cyclists from riding on pavements and endangering the lives of unwary pedestrians?

Stopping drunken layabouts from intimidating innocent passers-by in Abbey Gardens?

Saving victims of violence and muggings?

Not really.

Actually, although I’m sure he thought he had good reason to, he was carrying out a highly embarrassing stop-and-search on one of the most honest people I know.

Did he find anything criminal or even suspicious?

I don’t think so!

Meanwhile, back down our street and in other parts of town which hardly ever see a front-line ‘proper policeman’ ...
