CLUBS and social groups are aplenty in Grantham, but some stand out because they go that extra mile for the community.
One such club is Grantham Lions Club.
Throughout the year, members raise money for local causes and form part of events such as Grantham Carnival.
Lion Godfrey Mackinder said: “Lions are ordinary people who do amazing things.
“There are lots of social groups in the area where you can meet new people, but being able to make a difference to the community as well makes Lions a bit different.
“Our motto is ‘We Serve’. Fund-raising for the local community is at the heart of what Grantham Lions stand for.”
The Grantham club, which is part of Lions International, formed in 1971 and has raised thousands of pounds for charities such as Grantham Hospice, Grantham Hospital and local cancer support.
Not only that, Lions also play an active part in helping the community by running several events throughout the year, including a variety concert for the over-60s.
The social side of the club is just as important.
Godfrey said: “The club also has an active social side, focusing on providing friendship and fellowship for all its members.
“We’re keen to attract new members to join our lively programme of events.”
Sadly, membership has declined over the years and currently stands at 14. Godfrey is eager to reach out to new members to ensure the club and its good work continues.
Men and women of all ages are invited to go along to meetings to see if they enjoy it. Lions meet on the first and third Thursday of every month.
Membership costs £36 for six months. To find out more, call Godfrey on 01476 561706.
