ANGLING: Bottesford association members fish annual cup match

Bottesford and District Angling Association members took part in the annual MS Lamcote Cup match, held on the Erewash Canal at Dockholme.

The Lamcote Cup was presented by Lamcote Coaches in the early post-war years and has been fished for on the first Sunday of the season by angling clubs to the east of Nottingham ever since. Long Eaton were invited to join a few years ago when numbers began to dwindle.

The original cup was lost a few years ago, but Radcliffe on Trent Angling Society chairman Greg Chapman generously presented a replacement which was fished for this year for the first time, with 40 anglers turning out for the match.

Considering the tropical conditions and gin clear water, the results were encouraging, with all anglers catching and an outstanding individual winning weight of 40lb 10oz for Barnstone angler Kelvin Redwood.

Kelvin drew a peg under the willows below Dockholme Lock and benefited from the shade. He caught 15 bream, mainly on sweetcorn.

Bottesford’s Bryan Baines had two bream from nearer the lock for second place with 5:11, whilst Nick Stone (Long Eaton) was third with the best weight above the lock of 5:07, made up of a tench and perch. Barnstone’s Bryn Marrison Barnstone (4:15) was fifth.

Team results: 1 Barnstone ‘Leg Ends’ 11 points 50lb 0oz, 2 Bottesford ‘Gold’ 11 14:13, 3 Long Eaton Fed ‘B’ 15. With the top two teams both scoring 11 points, Barnstone took the trophy on superior weight.

+ Bottesford and District Angling Association’s fifth evening sweepstake takes place today (Friday), whilst the next club match will be held at Stretton Lakes on Sunday.
