The British Indoor Combined Events Championships for under-15 and under-17 age groups were held at Sheffield at the weekend.

Over the two days of competition, the standard was very high particularly in the under-17 men’s heptathlon in which the winner from Scotland set a new British record.

Local athlete Lewis Davey contested this event which tests the speed, strength and stamina of the competitors. The seven events were 60m, high jump, long jump and shot on day one and 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1,000m on Sunday.

Lewis competed consistently over the seven events. His first event of 60m saw him equal his personal beat of 7.46sec. This was followed be a 1.73m high jump and a personal best in the long jump of 6.44m. He completed his first day with a shot performance of 10.66m, placing him in eighth position out of the 23 competitors.

Day two started with the 60m hurdles in which Lewis had the third fastest time of 8.64sec. He then cleared 2.91m in the pole vault. In the final event, the 1,000m, he ran the second fastest time of 2min 52.24sec to give him a personal best total of 4,410 points and an excellent fifth place out of the 23 competitors.

These performances bode well for the outdoor season in which he will compete in octathlon competitions.
