ATHLETICS: Grantham AC contest annual Newark race week

Three Grantham Athletic Club runners took part in the 31st staging of the Gordon Whelbourn race week at Newark.

The event consists of five races on five different courses over five consecutive nights, with times being added up to find the week’s champions. Paul Davidson won the second MV50 prize for his performance on the Friday night which is also considered as a separate event.

The courses were: Monday – Devon Park (3.14 miles), Tuesday – Grove Leisure Centre (3.26 miles), Wednesday – Flowserve Social Club (3.05 miles), Thursday – Farndon Marina (3.04 miles), Friday – Flowserve Social Club (6.68 miles).

Results: Paul Davidson – 21:52, 22:17, 28:07; 33:03, 47:20; 2:32:34; 26th. Jan Davidson – 24:30, 26:38, 23:36, 24:18, 55:25; 2:34:27; 29th. John Ellerby – 28:12, 31:32, 28:16, 28:54, 1:05:35; 3:02:29; 49th.

Grantham AC had 14 athletes competing at four parkruns over the weekend.

Highlights were a top three finish for Aaron Hunt and a personal best for his father Chris Hunt at the Peterborough event. At the Belton House event there were lots of fine performances. Matthew Dunstan reduced his best Belton time by 1:16, Joanna McGrath took 57 seconds off her PB, Stephen Hobday reduced his by 22 seconds and George Hattton shaved a further three seconds of his PB.

A torrential down pour did not stop Dona Hall notching up her fastest time over the Belton course, celebrating her 50th birthday run in fine style.
