ATHLETICS: Grantham AC impress at National XC Championships
The cross country season is now coming to a climax with the large, very competitive national events taking place.
Last weekend saw Grantham Athletic Club athletes competing in the National Championships which were held at Wollaton Park, Nottingham.
The course was a new design and proved to be about as tough as it can get with athletes going up and down the hills in the park, and through mud and water up to their knees. Completing the course was a result in itself.
The Rodell brothers continued their great season with Rori (U15 boys) coming in 177th out of 379 finishers, whilst Ewan (U13 Boys) had another very impressive run, finishing 59th in a field of 458 finishers.
The U13 boys were well represented with Peter Braybook (135th) and Harry Denton (184th) putting in great performances.
With all three being in the top 50 per cent for their age group in such a high class event represents real success and bodes well for the future.
In the U13 girls race, Grantham AC was represented by Ffion Trundell who was competing at this level for the first time. Ffion took on the course with real grit and determination with 460 other competitors and came in 277th – a terrific result.
The U17 boys entered a full team consisting of Aaron Hunt, William Tucker, Joshua Gudgeon and George Hatton to take on the 6km course. They finished 181st, 127th, 298th and 262nd in another huge field, coming in as the top Lincolnshire team and 23rd in the country.
Helen Braybrook (255th) and Isabel Hobday (260th) represented Grantham in the U15 girls’ race and enjoyed strong runs, tracking each other all the way through the mud, again being in the top 60 per cent in the country for their age group.
The senior men – Stephen Hobday, Chris Hunt, Arthur Short and Phil Hall – competed over the 12km course along with almost 3,000 other seniors, the measure of success here being to complete this gruelling course!
If you think you have what it takes, come and join and represent your town of Grantham in these national events.
