ATHLETICS: Grantham AC’s Allen runs sub-three hour marathon at Manchester

When it comes to marathons, Grantham Athletic Club has a remarkable history and the latest addition to its collection of pedigree runners is Ben Allen.

He competed in the Greater Manchester Marathon at the weekend and broke the elusive three hour barrier with ease in a time of 2hr 56min 46sec, finishing 241st from the 9,000-plus field.

Seasoned marathon runner Tony Madge who has a marathon PB of 2.33, opted for the Hose Half Marathon, finishing in 1.33.15 for 86th position from the 500-strong field.

The club also had multiple successes in the Run in the Woods series of races at Bourne which saw Will Tucker finish first and set a new course record in the 3km event.

Clubmate Aaron Hunt was the second male home and Isabel Hobday was on the podium too with a ladies’ second place.

Results: 3km – 1 Will Tucker 10.48, 2 Aaron Hunt 11.06, 2 (F) Isabel Hobday 12.47; 10km – 43 Mark Tucker 47.47, 49 Sophia Tucker 48.39, 71 Chris Hunt.

l Five Grantham AC members competed in windy conditions in the Charnwood AC Open Meet at Loughborough on Sunday.

In the 100m, the Hunt sisters, Amy and Holly, ran 12.47 and 16.12 seconds respectively. Gabrielle Lucas ran in the 75m hurdles and finished in 14.23.

Later in the day, Helen Braybrook competed in the third heat of the 1500m whilst Aaron Hunt, fresh from competing in Bourne in the morning, ran in the fifth heat. finishing in a personal best time of 4.29.04.

l Seven GAC parkrunners competed at four 5km events over the weekend.

Results: Lincoln – 6 William Tucker 19.19, 8 George Hatton 19.25, 56 Mark Tucker 22.45; Newark – 32 Geoff Collier 23.34; Melton Mowbray – 38 Richard Hall 26.20, 83 Dona Hall 32.55; Rutland Water – 40 John Ellerby 26.16.
