Grantham Athletic Club teenager Helen Braybrook began the new season with a trip to Corby AC last Tuesday.

She made her debut at an unusual 1,000m distance in an open race against competitors of all ages.

Helen was the first under-13, girl or boy, to finish in a time of 3min 22.6sec, knocking more than 27 seconds off the Grantham AC record that has stood since 1997. And in doing so, she became the second fastest under-13 girl for the distance in the country this year.

Helen’s coach Geoff Collier said: “This was a fantastic start to the new track season and shows the benefit of winter training.”

Helen has been Lincs Under-13 Cross-country champion for the last two years and is the reigning Lincs Under-13 1500m champion. She is the Grantham AC under-13 record holder for 1200m, 1500m and 4x100m relay.
