ATHLETICS: Grantham athletes tackle challenging Nene Valley 10

The Nene Valley 10-mile road race round the streets of Peterborough has the reputation for being one of the most treacherous in the region.

But this year, rain on top of a heavy leaf fall made looking out to avoid getting injured the main priority for the six Grantham Running Club athletes who took part.

Despite the challenging nature of the course on the day, Scott Jones not only managed to set a personal best time but was also able to dip under the 70-minute mark.

He was closely followed by the rapidly improving Andrew Spencer who knocked two-and-a-half minutes off a PB set earlier this year. For fellow GRC team-mates Nick and Louise Payne, and Ruth Dunston, it was their first time at the distance.

Results: Scott Jones 1hr 9min 54sec, Andrew Spencer 1:13:23, Robert McArdle 1:14:19, Nick Payne 1:17:19, Ruth Dunstan 1:24:35, Louise Payne 1:27:47.

l Grantham Athletic Club’s Dean Houlton earned himself a personal at Clumber Park where he tackled the Parkrun after recently moving into the Vet 50 category.

He finished in fifth place in a time of 18:41 for the 5km distance.

Keith Measures used Saturday’s Newark Parkrun as a warm-up event for the Nene Valley 10-mile race in Peterborough the following day.

He finished 35th at Newark in 25:16 and 221st on Sunday in 1:19:27.
