ATHLETICS: Grantham RC ladies scoop team prize at Sleaford Half-marathon

Grantham Running Club’s ladies picked up the prize for first team home in a testing Sleaford Half-marathon on Sunday.

Anna O’Hare, Catherine Payne and Lucy Roberts were the first team of three to cross the line, with Anna also crossing the line as the second lady home and Catherine winning the first female veteran prize.

The club fielded 13 runners in total at the event, with Rob Howbrook and Dean Riggall picking up new personal bests for the distance.

Following the race, UKA rankings were upgraded, with Will Parkin now ranked seventh in his age group, Rob Howbrook 29th in his, and Anna O’Hare 122nd nationwide.

Results: 38 Ben Hatherley 1hr 29min 18sec, 49 Anna O’Hare 1:29:54, 51 Will Parkin 1:29:27, 52 Iain Brown 1:29:56, 57 Rob Howbrook 1:30:30, 61 Andrew Pask 1:30:51, 64 Dean Riggall 1:31:03, 130 Catherine Payne 1:38:18, 136 Robert McCardle 1:38:35, 183 Sophie Stanley 1:44:09, 379 Lucy Roberts 1:58:51, 498 Chris England 2:13:52, 527 Gwenda Williams 2:17:38.

l Grantham RC fielded athletes in Parkruns at Newark and Melton Mowbray over the weekend.

At the Newark event, five clubmates took part with Andrew Spencer the first home in 22:06. Warren Stark recorded 23:33 to cross the line as the 36th finisher. There were also strong performances from Nick Payne 32:35, Wendy Hobson 39:24 and Louise Payne 39:25.

Meanwhile at Melton, Mark Wilson posted a spectacular time, crossing the line in 20:47 to finish 12th, while Julie Wilson managed a respectable 29:15.

l Nick Payne completed the chip-timed Tarpley 20 through picturesque rural West Suffolk.

The race consisted of a choice of a 10- or 20-mile single lap course and was an ideal tester for the start of the spring marathon season. Nick completed the race in 2:50:17, finishing in 170th place.

l A little further afield, the club’s Australian member John Blair took part in the Geelong River Run 10km race.

John left home at 6am with temperatures in the mid-20s, starting the race at 8am.

He completed the course in 48:58 and was seventh in his age category.

John said: “It was a lovely course following the Barwon River. As I drove away at 9am, the temperature was 32; a very hot day but great fun.”

l A quartet of Grantham Athletic Club runners completed Sunday’s Sleaford Half-marathon.

The club’s road captain Paul Davidson said times were hampered by strong winds and a two-mile off-road stretch.

Adam Madge continued his marathon build-up with a top 10 finishing position, and Sophie Stanley knocked nearly two minutes off her last year’s time.

Results: 9 Adam Madge 1:21:15, 183 Sophie Stanley 1:42:26, 216 John Bainbridge 1:44:09, 481 Keith Measures 2:11:21.

l Grantham AC had four athletes competing at the Newark Parkrun on Saturday.

Under-17 female Kate Davis-Bavin managed to knock nearly six minutes off her PB on only her second outing, while Janice Anderson returned to the racing circuit after a forced lay-off due to injury.

Results: 9 Dean Houlton 19:13, 16 Paul Davidson 21:05, 73 Janice Anderson 26:44, 79 Kate Davis-Bavin 27:09.
