ATHLETICS: Grantham RC’s Mason completes mammoth endurance event
A Grantham Running Club athlete has completed the coveted Long Distance Walkers Association 100-mile endurance event.
Ultra runner Ben Mason began his journey at 2pm on Saturday and returned at 5.15am on Monday morning after moving continually across 100 miles of undulating Lancashire countryside.
Ben saw the sun set and rise twice during the event, which included 12,162ft of ascent across the circular course, and is the first GRC member to complete the mammoth distance.
Participants are required to navigate between checkpoints across exposed moorland whilst carrying equipment to keep them safe during the event.
The annual “100” takes part in a different part of the country each year and represents one of the most testing challenges for an endurance athlete.
Ben finished the event exhausted and relived in a time of 39 hours and 15 minutes. His achievement was all the more impressive as it was his first attempt at the distance.
He said: “Having had a quick sneaky peek at my feet, I don’t think I’ll be wearing flip flops this summer.”
l Meanwhile, clubmate Matthew Kingston-Lee smashed his 10km personal best by 10 seconds, completing the London BUPA 10,000m race in 34min 24sec.
His previous best for the distance was 34:34, set at an event in Leeds in 2013.
He said: “I am delighted considering I’ve done very little running this year and basically no speed work at all since I started running again at the beginning of April.”
Matthew went through 5km in 17:10 and held on strongly to the end, finishing 138th out of 12,000 entrants.
l Will Parkin completed the flat, rural Deepings 10km 10K race in 37:12, coming home in 16th place. l GRC’s park runners were out in force at the weekend, taking part in events around the country.
