ATHLETICS: Grantham RC’s Meadows completes his toughest event
Gav Meadows of Grantham Running Club took part in the extremely hilly Beacon Trail Half Marathon on Sunday.
The two lap race took place in the Beacon Hill Country Park near Loughborough which boasts the second highest point in Leicestershire. The course has a total climb of almost 2,000 feet making it one of the toughest half marathons around.
Gav finished 61st in a field of 295 runners, recording a time of 1hr 48min 58sec.
He said: “I knew going into this race that it wasn’t going to be easy but I underestimated just how tough this course is. This is my slowest ever time for a half marathon, including my first one almost a year ago.
“The brutal, energy sapping hills combined with some very muddy sections of the course made this one of the toughest events I’ve ever taken part in.”
Paul Rushworth travelled to the Peak District to take part in the 25 mile Six Dales Circuit event.
More than 100 fell runners took part in the event which visited Biggin Dale, Wolfscote Dale, Beresford Dale, Hartington, Monyash, Lathkill Dale, Bradford Dale and Long Dale.
Heavy rain during the final section over exposed moorland marred otherwise ideal conditions for fell running. Paul finished the event in 4:19.
Grantham RC had two of their veteran runners taking part in last weekend’s Skegness 10km road race.
Despite a 45mph wind and driving rain, both managed respectable positions. Robert McArdle finished 69th out of 400 entrants in a time of 46:36, with teammate Neil Emerson coming close to his best in a time of 47:45 to finish in 85th place.
Park runners were out in force at the weekend with GRC’s Chris Limmer finishing first at Corby Parkrun in a superb time of 18:13.
Elsewhere at Grantham’s new Belton House Parkrun, the club’s members were out on force running and volunteering.
