ATHLETICS: Grantham RC trio tackle North Yorkshire Moors event
Three athletes from Grantham Running Club took on the arduous North Yorkshire Crosses event on the Moors at the weekend.
The 53-mile circular challenge incorporated more than 4,000ft of climbing and started and finished at Goathland.
Experienced distance expert Paul Rushworth slowly worked through the field, catching his team-mates Robert McCardle and Catherine Payne at 15 miles and running with for five, before upping his speed to make a bid for the lead.
However, Paul tore a calf muscle on a steep descent and was forced to retire just as he was moving into the top 10.
Despite making a wrong turn in the forest at 32 miles and getting lost knee deep in water on the moor just after midnight, both Robert and Catherine were pleased to finish in joint 15th place in a time of 12hr 43min, well inside the 24-hour cut-off point.
l GRC’s Penny Hodges set a new personal best in the Notfast 10km road race.
She finished second in her age group and fifth lady overall in 42:40. Also running well, team-mate Stuart Sinclair put in a sub-40 minute time.

l Gav Meadows continued his Robin Hood Marathon preparation by competing in the Rugby Half-marathon on Sunday.
He said: “I recently decided that I need to cover as many miles as possible in a race environment in order to be as ready as possible come September. This was my fifth half-marathon and I have three more to do before the big day.”
The course was moderately challenging with a total climb of 470 feet. Gav finished 66th overall, just missing out on a personal best with a time of 1:36.
l GRC runners were out in force at parkruns over the weekend.
Matt Kingston-Lee finished first at Peterborough, bettering his previous 5km parkrun PB by 44 seconds.
