Grantham Running Club’s Matthew Kingston-Lee won the inaugural Maverick Original Somerset Trail Race on Saturday.

The 22km multi-terrain course, based in Kilve, took in more than 800m of vertical ascent and descent as runners tackled the demanding Quantock Hills.

After a swift opening kilometre, Matthew took the lead on the opening climb, only to be caught on the descent when he suffered unexpected early cramp in his thigh muscles. He retook the lead on the second climb and survived the subsequent descent with minimal further discomfort from his cramping thighs.

He extended his lead on the third and hardest climb of the race and was untroubled for the rest of the race.

Matthew finished first in 1hr 44min 53sec, just under three minutes clear of the second placed runner. In addition to a medal and technical T-shirt awarded to all finishers, Matthew received a pair of £120 Newton trainers for his efforts.

l Grantham RC fielded three teams and one solo runner in the 24-hour Thunder Run off-road relay race in Catton Park at the weekend.

Tactics, endurance, speed and teamwork were all tested, with rain and mud and running at night all added into the mix.

Staurt Sinclair, Mark Wilson, Robert Howbrook, Andrew Spencer, Arthur Short, Andrew Pask, Sam MacAllister and Sarah High made up GRC’s first team of eight, and completed 30 laps (300km/187m) in 24:30:51. This put them in 16th position out of 229 teams, a very impressive result.
