William Wright, a junior cricketer at Woodhall Spa Cricket Club, and former pupil of St Hugh’s School, competed in the South Derbyshire and East Staffordshire Schools Cross Country Championship at Barton under Needwood on Wednesday.

Thirteen-year-old William, who had little training beforehand, put in a strong race against 52 other Year 8 and 9 runners to gain the bronze medal, qualifying him to run for South Derbyshire Schools in the county championships in January 2016.

Over a demanding, hilly 3.5km course, William was only just pipped into third place but was more than 300 metres ahead of his nearest rival.
