ATHLETICS: Grantham’s Gav reaches marathon challenge halfway point

Grantham Running Club’s Gavin Meadows travelled to Stoke-on-Trent on Sunday to take part in the Potteries Marathon.

The race started at the Bet 365 Stadium, home of Stoke City FC, then twisted and turned around residential areas of the city before returning to the stadium for the finish. The course was a real test with a total accumulated climb of 1,412 feet.

It was Gav’s sixth marathon in as many calendar months as he reached the halfway point of his 12 month personal challenge. He finished the race in a time of 3hr 49min 47sec, placing 97th in a field of 414.

Gav said: “I knew going into this race that I wasn’t going to be anywhere near a PB because of the hills and also the fact that I completed the Seabank Marathon the previous Sunday. The objective here was simply to keep my challenge going after an injury scuppered my original plans for June, forcing me to run two marathons seven days apart.

“Things were going okay until mile 19 when my pace dropped off a cliff! The cumulative effects of the previous week hit me really hard. I was even forced to walk on a couple of the hills towards the end of the course.”
