A total of 430 runners completed the 10th annual Newton’s Fraction half-marathon organised by Grantham Athletic Club on Sunday.
The chilly conditions did not stop Ian Bailey of Sleaford Town Runners heading the field to be first home in a time of 1hr 14m in 16sec, with Sian Thomas of Chiltern Harriers the first woman to finish in 1:23:54.
Matthew Emery was the first Grantham AC athlete home in fifth place in 1:17:18, with Adam Madge close behind in 10th place in 1:19:51: Other Grantham AC rubbers completing the course were:
Others: Arthur Short 1:32:04 (40th), Catherine Muir 1:47:36 (173rd), Julie Stewart 1:50:29 (192nd), Trudy Hansen 2:06:26 (340th), Phil Hall 2:17:21 (387th).
Former Grantham AC athlete Jon Mitcham, now running for Todmorden Harriers, returned to compete and finished 19th overall in a time of 1:24:04 to win the male veteran 55 category.
The Little Apple fun run attracted 46 competitors with Rori Rodell and Helen Braybrook of Grantham AC taking the award for the first boy and girl to finish.
Grantham AC to expressed its appreciation to all the marshals and volunteers, including those from Inspire+ and the 2nd Battalion of The Royal Anglian Regiment, who also braved the blustery conditions and made the event possible.
The club also thanked the event sponsors – Brooks, Asda, Brewster’s Brewery and Lincolnshire Runner – for their support in sustaining the event.

First home for the club was Abi Schofield in 1:31:38 for 46th place overall, followed closely by Rob Howbrook who was one place behind in 1:31:54.

l A trio of runners from Grantham RC took part in the Newark Parkrun on Saturday.
Will Parkin was first home in a staggering 17:44 for second place. Nick Payne finished in 23:18 for 17th and clubmate Ruth Dunstan completed the 5km course in 31:30.
l Grantham RC’s Dean Riggall and Andrew Spencer elected to run the chip-timed 13.1-mile Silverstone Half-marathon.
Rigall recorded 1:28:27 for 219th place and Spencer (1:36:51) was 664th.
