ATHLETICS: Payne back to her best

IN a return to full fitness, Grantham Athletic Club’s Catherine Payne recorded a season’s best in the Bedford Half-marathon on Sunday.

Catherine completed the overcrowded and hilly course in 1hr 38min 54sec which was inside her previous best for this run.

Also among the 2,400 starters in this run was Robert McArdle who finished in 1:38:21

l Paul Rushworth was GAC’s sole competitor in this year’s Stockport 10 on Sunday, when he returned home to compete after an absence of nine years.

Although well short of race condition, his time of 1:12:41 was better than he had expected to achieve.

l Three Grantham runners gave good accounts of themselves in this year’s Keyworth Half-marathon Turkey Trot which raised funds for the local scout group.

Nick Payne was first of the trio home in 1:48:20, Robert Dransfield clocked 2:02:02 with Graham Livermore recording a time of 2:15:25.

l Grantham Athletic Club members will be picking up Lincolnshire Cross Country League medals at the county championships in Louth at the beginning of next month.

Sophia Tucker won gold and Polly Atherton silver in the under-17 women category. In the under-15 boys, Jake Hornby won gold and Joshua Lord the silver.

Veteran Arthur Short narrowly missed out on bronze on the countback rule. Under-11s Frances Sheard, Abbie Smith and William Tucker completed at least three out of the four races.

In the team awards, GAC picked up gold in the under-15 boys and silver in the under-13 girls.
