Polly Atherton and Sophia Tucker ran the Race for Life in Leicester and finished joint sixth, crossing the line together in about 23min 30sec.

The girls received 86 donations totalling more than £1,700, almost six times their original target of £300.

They are raising money for Cancer Research UK, in support of their mothers who have both been diagnosed with breast cancer in the last year.

One special donation came from BBC Radio 5 Live presenter Nikki Campbell who promised to help them over the £1,000 mark, after Sophia’s father rang into his ‘Your Call’ show.

Polly and Sophia would like to thank all of those who have donated so far, and for anyone who would like to visit their just giving page, the web link is

l Grantham Running Club’s Wendy Tremain organised a team of ladies to take part in the women only WR 10km race along the Embankment in Nottingham.

The race was part of a series hosted by the magazine ‘Women’s Running’ round the UK, encouraging greater female participation in sport. Also in her team were Yvonne Taylor and Nikki Carr who found it tough in the muggy conditions.

l GRC had four athletes taking part in this Fernwood 5km race just south of Newark.

As it was the first time any of them had ever tackled the distance, there were personal bests all round.

Results: Penny Hodges 21min 27sec, Robert McArdle 21:47, Paul Durham 23:52, Andrew MacAllister 24:17.

l GRC’s Catherine Payne completed the St Ives 10km road race in Cambridgeshire in a season’s best 43:18.

l Despite the heat, there were strong performances at the front of the field in last weekend’s Newark Parkrun, with two of GRC’s men securing a top 10 finish, and Louise Payne making her debut at the event.

Results: 7 Stuart Sinclair 20:30, 8 Iain Brown 20:37, 17 Mark Hillson 22:52, 38 Christopher Armstrong 24:28, 78 Louise Payne 28:25, 146 Nick Payne 45:17.
