ATHLETICS: Record entry contest Ropsley Raid

A RECORD entry of runners and walkers took part in the annual Ropsley Raid last Sunday.

Organised by Ropsley Road Runners, a total of 175 competitors tested themselves on either the 13 or six-mile multi-terrain courses.

Despite a troublesome wind and muddy, sticky conditions, some very quick times were achieved for the type of event.

All competitors received a goodie bag which included gloves and a special commemorative hat.

Results: 13-mile - 1 Mark Sands 1hr 39min 52sec, 2 Tom Humphries 1.40.22, 3 Dave Tilley 1.41.24; top lady - Gina Handall (14th overall) 1.54.33.

6-mile - 1 Richard Vandermark 41.46, 2 David Babbs 46.14, 3 David Sabey 46.46; top lady - Bo Haywood (5th overall) 48.34.

Grantham Athletic Club’s 17-year-old Polly Atherton transferred her fleet-footedness from the track to off-road in the six-mile event and finished a superb eighth overall and second fastest lady in 51.15.

Other Grantham AC results: 6-mile - 14 John Bainbridge 55.38, 19 Keith Measures 57.54; 13-miles - 17 Jez Page 1.55.34.

l Ropsley Road Runners duo Tony Johnson and Nigel McDermott competed in the Folksworth 15-mile road race in Cambridgeshire on Sunday.

The pair battled through windy conditions with Tony recording 1.40.15 and Nigel 1.59.12.
