BADMINTON: Ponton’s Ryan continues to impress at county championships
Great Ponton’s Ryan Curtis continued his impressive recent form by adding two more trophies to his growing collection, following success at the Lincolnshire Badminton Under-17 Championships, held at Lincoln University on Sunday.
Victories in the U17 boys’ doubles and U17 mixed doubles capped a fine day’s effort from Ryan who only celebrated his 15th birthday earlier in the week.
Ryan, who was attempting to become the first boy to complete a clean sweep of all County U15 and U17 titles, was only denied by a superb display from top seed Jack Railton, who defeated Ryan on his way to winning the U17 singles title.
Ryan, together with his young partner Ryan Chan, who were unseeded in the boys’ doubles, triumphed over the second seeds in the qualifying round, before holding their nerve to win a nail biting final against top seeds Albert Wood and Sean Dever (22-20, 20-22, 25-23), despite squandering eight match points.
In the mixed doubles, Ryan and Meg Hassall, who had already won the U15 mixed doubles a few weeks earlier, defeated the second seeds in a hard fought three set semi-final, before claiming a comfortable straight sets victory against favourites Sean Dever and Molly Price in the final.
