BOWLS: Grantham’s Orrey wins tie-break to go through to second round of Worlds

Bowls news.

Grantham boy and England international Matthew Orrey has caused a sensation at the Just Retirement Professional World Indoor Bowls Championships by knocking out tournament favourite Paul Foster MBE in the first round of the singles event this afternoon (Wednesday).

Foster, a four-time world champion, 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist and one of the legends of the sport, looked on course for an easy win after claiming the first set 9-1, but Orrey fought back brilliantly to claim the second set 9-3 and then win on the final end of the best-of-three-end tie-break.

The 26-year-old will now play either John Price or Simon Skelton in the second round, scheduled to take place on Tuesday afternoon at Potters Resort in Norfolk.

See Friday’s Journal for more details.
