BOXING: Grantham club coach hails show as a great success
Grantham Amateur Boxing Club’s show was a great success at The Meres leisure centre on Saturday night.
Club head coach Dean Fardell praised the people of Grantham and the surrounding area for turning out in such large numbers, approximately 350 to 400, and the facilities.
Dean said: “It was a great night and very well supported. It’s a good thing for Grantham to have. It’s a cracking venue, they do look after us.”
There were 13 bouts in all, with four involving members of the Gas Works Lane-based Grantham club.
Both making their return to the ring after more than a year out, Terry Bennett and Nathan Wallace once again did the club proud by recording wins.
It was 13th bout of Terry’s career and he came up against Steve Wright, of Fusion Boxfit, who he beat after a judges’ split decision.
Dean said: “He was a bit ring rusty, but it was nice to see him come back. He started well with jabs, good combinations and nice footwork.”
The club awarded Terry the Wilmore Dunleavy Trophy for the best Grantham boxer on the night.
Clubmate Nathan Wallace faced Ryan Amos, from Nottingham club Badboyz. Amos is supposed to be turning professional, but Nathan disposed of him by a unanimous decision.
Dean said: “It was a good comeback fight. Nathan kept him on the end of his jab, with good combinations and movement. He was never in danger of losing.”
Young Jack Roberts came face to face with Harry Nelson (Fusion Boxfit), but lost on a unanimous decision in his first bout.
Dean said: “It was a nice little bout, he did remarkably well. He’s a really lovely lad to train.
“He walked on to too many shots, but the future is bright for him.”
Representing the club in a skills bouts was Shawn Follows. Dean said: “Shawn did well in this third bout. We are pleased with his progress. He’s ready near enough for a proper bout.”
Dean said the club is doing really well and he has another two or three promising lads coming through to box.
The club is open four nights a week for training and there is a fitness night on Fridays which costs just £3.
