Witham Wheelers Llewey Byrne, Paul Conneely, Reece Egner and Tony Swaby were part of a 74-rider field in the Rockingham Forest two-day stage race in Market Harborough at the weekend.

Stage One was a three-mile individual time trial. Reece was the best placed, taking sixth place, with Llewey, Paul and Tony all slotting in the top half.

The afternoon saw a 50-mile undulating road race, five times around a 10-mile loop.

As soon as the racing commenced, Llewey was on the attack, taking another rider with him. They stayed away for three laps before being reeled in. But that did not stop him taking a strong fourth in the bunch sprint. Tony grabbed fifth while Paul and Reece finished in the bunch.

Sunday was a 56-mile road race which went up the Devil’s Staircase six times, with Reece lying sixth overall the others all still in good positions.

The race split up immediately with the front group only consisting of 25 riders. Reece and Llewey made it into the split, with Paul and Tony both in the chasing group.

Paul, Reece and Tony all fell foul of punctures but Llewey stuck in the front group and took another fourth place in the sprint.

This left him a very commendable 14th overall.
