CYCLING: Egner brothers contest circuit series

Have your say

NUMBERS were down in the latest round of the Pedal Pushers Circuit Race league series at Yarborough, Lincoln, on Sunday.

But racing was still exciting and Witham Wheelers’ Reece Egner came third in the Youth A category, with his brother Adam finishing out of the places in Youth B.

In the Senior 2/3/4 category, Peter Cocker punctured on the first lap but was soon prominent back at the front of the bunch. A crash left just six riders contesting the sprint with Peter taking fifth.

l The latest Velo 99 road race at Staunton on Sunday saw all the handicap groups come together with three miles remaining.

Wheeler Paul Conneely took second place in the 40-rider sprint with Phil Atherton in third and Dave Moulds sixth. Finishing in the bunch were Rob Johnson, Ross Tomblin, Tony Mendham, Dave Herd and Kim Paxton.

l There were fast times in Newark Castle CC’s open 10-mile time trial at Long Bennington on Saturday.

Despite the wet conditions, both Tony Hardenburg (26min 48sec) and Patrick Cutmore (22.43) recorded personal bests. Martin Lister turned in a rapid 24.48 despite taking a tumble on the slippery Gonerby Moor roundabout.

l Friday evening’s Scunthorpe Track League saw Peter Cocker riding aggressively in all his Senior A races, but he lacked the finishing speed for top final placings. His father Simon was happy to follow the wheels in the Senior Bs.

l Tuesday evening’s club 18-mile time trial was held over two laps of a circuit taking in Hungerton, Croxton Kerrial and Saltby.

Winner by more than a minute was schoolboy Peter Cocker, ahead of Shaun Culpin and Bill Harrison.
