CYCLING: Grantham club ‘tester’ Coleman powers to victory in Skegness 10

TOP Witham Wheelers time trialist Jim Coleman rode the Skegness Wheelers 10 on the Gunby/Ulceby cross course on Sunday.

With a fairly strong south-westerly wind, conditions could have been better but Jim nevertheless won by almost a minute and a half in 20min 24sec from Tony Nash (Scunthorpe Poly RT) and Andy Broxholme (Lincoln Wheelers) who tied for second place.

Also competing for the Wheelers were John Farmer, who rode well to win his age group handicap with 24.27, and Paul Fairey who showed good form on his new time trial bike with 27.13.

l Two members of Witham Wheelers smashed their 10-mile time trial personal bests in the Ratae RC evening event on the Six Hills course last Wednesday.

Paul Fairey recorded 26min 6sec and Tony finished in 27.27.

l Peter Cocker rode the latest round of the National Junior Road Race Series on a rolling circuit near Leighton Buzzard on Sunday.

With a race distance of 70 miles and 80 of the top junior riders in the country, it was always going to be tough race in the hot conditions.

Peter was active at the front of the bunch throughout the race but missed the key break of seven riders which went clear with two of the six laps remaining. With five miles to go, Peter made a bid to go clear of the bunch with two other riders but they were caught by the bunch just before the finish hill and he finished just outside the top 30.

l Five Wheelers contested the latest Velo 99 road race at Willoughby on Sunday.

In the large bunch sprint, Phil Etches went first, followed by Chris Samler and Phil Atherton and they finished in that order within a couple of bikes lengths of each other and well in front of the chasing pack. Also riding was Rob Johnson and Kim Paxton made a rare road race appearance.
