Riding for Grantham team Pedal Pushers, Steve Young just missed out on a win in the annual Gerry Thurlow Memorial Trophy road race in Newark last Saturday.

Steve was one of around 60 riders in a strong field who tackled the flat, fast course and features cobbled sections. Having raced midweek at Mallory Park, where he grabbed second place, he was feeling good about the event.

Relentless efforts from Steve at trying to break from the main bunch proved fruitless, given course and field of riders, until the last lap in which Steve and two others attacked off the front and quickly built a slender 10-second gap over the main bunch.

The breakaway trio rode strongly and put in huge efforts to keep the peloton at bay, enabling to battle out a three man sprint for the chequered flag.

On the line, Steve was just half a wheel from victory, just pipped by a rider from SportGrubKuota.

Also competing was Witham Wheeler Harry Browning who finished comfortably in the main bunch.
