Riding for HMT Academy, Grantham’s Karl Baillie (HMT Academy) raced in the National Junior Road Race Championship on the tough Ryedale GP course on Sunday.
The racing was aggressive early on with a group of seven riders containing three of Karl’s team-mates breaking away.
Karl struggled to begin with but rode into the race and tried to bridge across the 30-second gap to the leaders on his own, but could not quite make it.
He recovered in the peloton before going on the attack again to finish in a solid ninth place behind the breakaway in a field of more than 100 riders.
l It was a warm but windy evening for Witham Wheelers’ 16.4-mile time trial based on two laps of a circuit based on Hungerton to Croxton Kerrial and Saltby.
Fastest rider on the night was in-form Reece Egner in 36min 35sec, more than half a minute in front of John Pilgrim, with James Westwood, steadily coming back to fitness, in third.
First lady was Jennifer McAndrew (Team Jadan), with Carol Milne not far behind and Louise George third.
Special mention went to 12-year-old schoolgirl Isobel Hobday for completing what is quite a tough rolling circuit.
Next Tuesday, it’s back to the 10-mile time trial leagu. Sign on after 6pm at Grantham Cricket Club on Gorse Lane. Guest riders and first timers are welcome.
