CYCLING: Grantham’s Browning records best result

Former Witham Wheeler Harry Browning recorded his best cycle race result in Ashfield RC’s third circuit event at Darley Moor on Saturday.

Now a privateer, second category rider Harry took part in the 34-mile E/1/2/3 race, held in appalling conditions with the wind playing a major factor in breaking up the field, and took his first points of the season with a creditable sixth place.

Two places behind was fellow second cat rider Steve Young (Pedal Pushers), and Steve’s first cat team-mate Peter Cocker came in 13th.

l Witham Wheelers’ first evening club time trial of the year was the traditional ‘two-up’ on Tuesday.

But it was almost blown away as gale force winds and circling rain and hail showers deterred all but the mad few from riding. Those that did stayed dry but were glad just to get round in one piece. Quickest pair on the evening was Ian Galpin and Simon Cocker with a narrow 16 second lead over father and son combination Mick and Reece Egner

Results: 1 Ian Galpin and Simon Cocker 26min 3sec, 2 Mick Egner and Reece Egner 26:19, 3 Michael Smalley and Steve Webb 27:27; Dave Herd 32:14, Suzanne Holdsworth 36:33; Martin Harlock and Jason Harlock DNF (puncture).

The first Club 10 proper is on Tuesday evening, starting at 6.30pm. Signing on is at Grantham Cricket Club, Gorse Lane, from 6pm.

l Three Wheelers rode a very wet and windy LRRA 25 at Saxilby on Sunday.

Results: 5 John Pilgrim 58:29, 10 Gary Symons 59:59, 43 Anthony Hardenberg 1:09:27.
