CYCLING: Grantham’s Cocker rides to fifth in Spalding Hilly

Grantham riders took part in the traditional early season Spalding CC Hilly 27-mile time trial on Sunday.

The tough, lung-bursting event began at Bourne Woods and followed the main road to Corby Glen, turning right at Corby Glen to Somerby roundabout, and then a fast return trip the same way back to Bourne.

Fastest of the Grantham contingent was Peter Cocker who finished a creditable fifth with a time of 1hr 0min 47sec. His PedalPushers team-mates Neil Sentance (1:10:36) and Kim Paxton (1:17:18) were 20th and 28th respectively.

Witham Wheelers results: 22 Michael Smalley 1:13:31, 26 Anthony Hardenberg 1:15:35, 27 Martin Lister 1:16:17, 33 Chris Crawford 1:24:49.

l Witham Wheelers were represented by four riders in the Bolsover 10 at Hatfield Woodhouse on Saturday.

John Pilgrim (22:58) finished a very creditable 13th, with the return leg into a strong headwind. Gary Symons recorded 23:33, Martin Hedley 25.17 and James Westwood 26.11.

l Karl Baillie (HMT Academy) raced in the Bernaudeau UCI junior race in France at the weekend.

He was dropped early on on the steep climbs but fought to get back on to the leading group.

Reaching the finishing circuit, Karl put in a big attack to form a small group who would contest the win.

Unfortunately, Karl hit the wall with a couple of miles to go in the long 84-mile race.

But it was a promising ride as heads into the first national series event in Wales at the weekend after a disappointing ride in the GP A. Noyelle in Belgium the previous week.

l Witham Wheelers’ evening time trials start on Gorse Lane on Tuesday evening with the traditional season-opening the two-up 10-miler, in which teams of two set off at one minute invervals.

The first team will set off at 6.45pm with signing on at Grantham Cricket Club from 6pm. Non-members are welcome to go along and have a go.
