CYCLING: Pedal Pusher Peter breaks hill climb event record

After a few months’ break from racing, Peter Cocker (Pedal Pushers) returned to action in the Bolsover Wheelers Hill Climb at Hardwick Hall, near Chesterfield.

A field of 85 tackled the short 800m climb on closed roads in the the grounds of the country house, with the course lit in sections by floodlights and a good crowd producing a great atmosphere on Sunday evening.

Starting early at number 29, Peter took seven seconds of the event record with a time of 1min 24.4sec and, as the favourites came and went, nobody could quite better his time. Andy Nicholls (Langsett Cycles) got closest with 1.25.0.

l It was another strong weekend for Witham Wheelers’ time trialists.

Gary Symons and Michael Smalley made the trek up to Hull to ride the nippy V718 course at South Cave, with both recording impressive personal bests – Gary with 20.21 and Mick 21.45.

Meanwhile on the A46 near Newark, the club were represented by five riders in the VTTA 25. Recording PBs were Rick Yates (55.22), James Westwood (56.48) and Martin Lister (1.02.35), whilst Anthony Hardenberg recorded 1.01.42 and Dave Herd 1.03.44.
