SEVERAL members of Witham Wheelers took part in the penultimate round of the Lincolnshire Cyclo-cross League, hosted by Cottingham Coureurs at Scunthorpe.

The course was mainly grass with only one dismount, and with the forecast heavy rain luckily holding of until near the end of the senior race, conditions were relatively fast.

With 55 riders starting the senior event, a good start was important Peter Cocker settled into a small group fighting for sixth place, but in the end had to settle for seventh overall and first junior (under-18) rider. Peter’s father Simon Cocker rode steadily and finished in 43rd position.

In the under-12s, Kerrigan Robb finished in his now customary third position.

l Six club riders took part in the second round of the MTB winter series at Thetford with another maximum field of 500 riders.

The course was more technical than the one used last month with bomb-holes, single-track, a couple of steep down hills and some fast sections.

Paul Conneely led the way from the start with the rest trying in vain to keep up with him. Ian Makevit had an off on lap one and was forced to retire with a bruised shoulder. Rob Johnson and guest rider Brian Cooke also stopped before the finish.

The other three riders finished well with Dave Moulds completing four laps in 2hr 20min for 90th overall and John Clifton taking 102nd in 2.23., both good improvements on their positions in the first race.

Best club rider was Paul who finished an excellent 51st in 2.09.

The next round of the competition is at the end of January.

l The club’s annual Mince Pie Run takes place on Sunday. Destination is Bleasby cafe with a 30-mile route outward and 25 miles return.

A slow group will leave the Market Cross at 8.30am and a quicker ride departs at 9am.
