With the forecast threatening heavy rain, two Witham Wheelers made the trek over towards Grimsby to ride the Scunthorpe RC 25 on a straight out-and-back course on the A180 on Sunday morning.

Unfortunately, the forecast held true and heavy rain greeted the earlier starters, subsiding to lighter as the race progressed, whilst a westerly wind hindered riders on the outbound leg and provided a gusty side-wind on the return.

Despite the conditions, Gary Symons powered to 56min 52sec, good enough for sixth place overall, and clubmate Rick Yates recorded 58.37 to take 12th.

The winning time of 51.04 by Adam Gascoigne, of Pedal Power Loughborough, showed the potential of the course.

l Peter Cocker (PedalPushers) put in another solid ride in an E123 race over nine laps of a seven-mile circuit around Bole Hill, near Buxton.

With the hills shrouded in mist and rain and a strong wind chill factor, conditions were best described as brutal.

With the circuit either climbing or descending, the race split on the first lap with seven riders getting a gap and were never seen again by the dwindling bunch.

Peter missed the early break but rode away from the bunch on the fourth lap with one other rider, before an unshipped chain caused him to drop back to the bunch.

He jumped away from the bunch again to catch his erstwhile companion with a lap to go, and then dropped him on the final climb to take eighth place.
