Witham Wheelers schoolboys Adam Egner and Robert McAndrew took part in the Lincs GHS 10-mile time trial district qualifier at Grimsby on Saturday.

Battling torrential rain on the part dual-carriageway course, Adam powered to a 55-second personal best to claim third place overall in 22min 54sec and a place in the national final later this year.

Robert also recorded a PB with 24.40 to qualify as first 14-year-old.

l John Pilgrim missed out on Witham Wheelers’ Open 10-mile time trial to contest the Tour of Cambridge Amateur World Championships qualifying event at Peterborough last weekend.

He was among 700 other time trialists hoping to finish in the top quarter of their age group band to qualify for the championships in Denmark in September.

The event was a little different from a normal time trial, with electronic timing, closed roads, a warm-up holding area with turbo trainers, and an indoor starting ramp.

Despite very windy conditions, John managed a respectable time of 39.06 for the sporting 28km course, good enough for 27th in his 19-34 age category and a place at the Worlds.
