Early goal eases Grantham Town through to county shield second round
Lincolnshire Senior County Shield
Brigg Town 0
Grantham Town 1
An early Lee Shaw goal proved to be enough to ease the Gingerbreads through to the second round of the Lincs Shield competition.
The goal came with only four minutes on the clock when Shaw was left with Brigg goalkeeper Rik Watson to beat. As Watson closed him down, Shaw stayed calm and chose his spot in the bottom corner.
The Gingerbreads had the upper hand, especially in the first half, and both Shaw and Danny Meadows forced Watson to pull off saves. Grantham could have doubled their advantage but Liam Read’s effort struck the post.
At the other end, Gingerbreads keeper was equal to Jordan Organ’s attempt to give Brigg an equaliser before half time.
Grantham rang the changes for the second half with multiple substitutions, including that of goalscorer Shaw with Alun Webb who fired a shot not far off target himself. Read also went close again.
The home side pressured for a late equaliser but the Gingerbreads held out and will now face Grimsby Town in the second round of the competition.
