FOOTBALL: Beehive United retain prestigious Grantham league cup
Culverthorpe Cup Final
Beehive United 2
Captain Martin Parke accompanied by his son and club mascot Charlie led his Beehive side out in a quest to retain the Culverthorpe Cup at Harrowby United’s stadium last Friday.
Both teams started very nervously with neither wanting to make a mistake in the biggest game of the season.
Some great work from James Ballaam in midfield created a chance for Danny Moore who shot straight at the Barrowby keeper. Billy Gray created a half chance for man of the moment Luke Peberdy, but again the Barrowby keeper was at his very best to keep the Stingers out.
Against the run of play, Barrowby took the lead with a unstoppable strike by Sam Tasker from 25 yards out.
Parke rallied his troops and within minutes the Beehive were level. Sam Scothern’s pinpoint 60-yard pass found Bobby Lee who headed home.
When the going got tough, some big tackles from James Green, Mark Gray and Matt Walton meant that the Stingers were winning the battle.
This ensured magical man-of-the-match Danny McDonald was given time to spray a precious 25-yard ball to the feet of Lee. ‘The Rocket’ left his marker for dead and smashed the ball in off the post with his unfavourable right foot to put Beehive 2-1 up going into the break.
Despite having to make a few enforced changed through injures, the Beehive never looked like conceding again with ‘captain fantastic’ Parke winning everything in the air and the impressive Callum Tyndall sweeping in behind his skipper.
The tireless workrate of McClean, Blackburn and Moore allowed Peberdy and Lee to continue to cause the Barrowby defence all sorts of trouble, with some good chances going amiss.
The Stingers comfortably held out to retain Grantham local football’s biggest prize and thus completing the double after winning the Charity Cup a week earlier.
Captain Martin Parke along with his son Charlie raised the prestigious 95-year-old trophy to massive applause from the big crowd
The Beehive players and manager would like to thank Andy and Jane from the Beehive, Mick and Bernie Gray from MG Roofing, Eebbaayy Autos and Parkes Plastering for their support and sponsorship throughout the season.
