FOOTBALL: Grantham Town tested by rampant Imps before defeating the Arrows
Lincolnshire Senior Shield
Grantham Town 1
Lincoln City 5
Grantham Town were unable to halt a rampant Imps side at The Meres on Friday night, with a bumper pre-season crowd of 524 in attendance.
The Gingerbreads were, as might be expected, generally outclassed in all departments by the National League side but showed great gumption to put in an improved second half performance that included a goal from new signing Danny Durkin.
Town went behind in the sixth minute when Terry Hawkridge took keeper Jake Turner by surprise.
Grantham’s best chance in the first half followed a break down the right, but Curtis Burrows’ effort went over the bar.
A competent looking Lincoln doubled their lead on the stroke of half time when Hawkridge sliced through Town’s defence, sidestepped Turner and slotted home.
The Imps increased their lead five minutes after the break through trialist James Caton and added a fourth on 70 minutes, courtesy of Jonny Margetts.
Town’s best chances came from Stefan Galinski, Grant Ryan, Sam Purcicoe and Ben Harris, before substitute Dur-kin nipped through the City defence and fired in past Paul Farman with aplomb.
Grantham conceded a penalty in added time when Purcicoe tripped Margetts in the box, who then got up to despatch the spot kick.
Grantham Town: Turner, Purcicoe, Storey, Carr, Galinski, Hollingsworth, Meadows, Lewis, Ryan, Burrows, McGhee. Subs: Beckett, Durkin, Hankin, Harris, Shaw.
