Ropsley clinched the Premier Division title with a thumping victory against Helpringham on Sunday.

Going into their penultimate league game of the season, Ropsley knew only a victory would be enough to make the title a mathematical certainty.

Ropsley captain Glenn O’Meara won the toss and chose to kick into a fierce gale in what was to be an even first half.

However, Ropsley were able to take a one goal lead into the break when Tom Parrish found the back of the net after the goalkeeper made a good stop to deny Ropsley striker George Petrou.

Parrish went close to putting Ropsley two ahead shortly before half time after dribbling inside from the left, but his fierce low drive struck the near post and ran clear across the goalmouth.

With the wind at their backs Ropsley made an excellent start to the second half with centre back Tom Hill heading in a Ben Lund corner at the back post.

Ropsley knew one more goal would put the game beyond Helpringham – and what a goal it was. The ball fell to Ropsley’s James Noon 20 yards out and the left back juggled the ball on chest and thigh before rocketing a volley past the shell-shocked goalkeeper.

Ropsley were playing full of confidence now and George Petrou was rewarded for an excellent performance with two goals. The first was a beautifully judged lob and the second came following a battling run into the box.

While Noon’s goal was a fantastic individual strike, Leori Petrou’s was a magnificent team effort. A flowing passing move culminated in a one-two with brother George, before Leori stabbed home with his left boot to complete the rout.

Ropsley have one final league fixture against Nobody Inn before attention turns to the Benny O’Meara Cup Final on May 3 at Harrowby United’s Environcom Stadium. Spectators are welcome.
