FOOTBALL: United win Grantham Sunday League’s Colsterworth derby

Arion Grantham & District Sunday League

Division One

Colsterworth United 3

AFC Colsterworth 0

Colsterworth United came out on top against their neighbours AFC Colsterworth, but it was not all plain sailing for United as AFC started the brighter of the two sides, forcing goalkeeper Davies to make a couple of saves early on.

United, playing their first game in three weeks, started to take the match by the scruff of the neck, with Spratley and Stokes combining well up front.

United suffered a setback on 18 minutes when midfielder Burkitt had to be substituted through injury, but was replaced by Withers. And it was not long before Withers set up the first goal, gliding his way through midfield to make a lovely weighted pass to Stokes, who smashed the ball past the AFC goalkeeper, giving him no chance.

United started to dominate the game from there on in, playing some lovely football, and it was not long before United went further in front.

Great work from Barren on the wing forced AFC to make a challenge on him, resulting in a free kick 10 yards from the byline. Munton took the free kick which resulted in the AFC goalkeeper pushing the ball out, only to find Lee Ballam who headed the ball into the net from close range.

United started brightly in the second half, with Munton and Barren causing trouble with their crosses, causing the AFC defence to be tied up in knots.

Feeling the game needed fleshing up, United’s manager made a few changes with Turner and Bryan coming on to make their debuts, along with Dilloway and Keanan Ballam.

The winning goal came on 65 minutes, with Turner and Dilloway combining well from the corner, with the latter crossing a lovely ball in for Daykin to head home, unmarked on the back post.

AFC tried to get a goal back, but the formidable defence of Stretton, Hack, Daykin, Bryan, and keeper Davies, made sure that United kept a clean sheet and took the three points.

Earlsfield 7

Ancaster 0

On a misty morning up on The Meres, AFC Earlsfield boosted their promotion chances with an emphatic victory over villagers Ancaster and Caythorpe.

The home side did not take long to open the scoring when Pierce Stimson’s 18-yard strike found the bottom corner.

Top scorer Nathan Brettoner doubled the lead with a simple tap-in at the near post, before Harry Hutton’s deflected shot made it 3-0.

Sam Sterry’s long ball over the top picked out Morgan Taylor who coolly knocked the ball past the helpless Ancaster keeper.

Brettoner managed to get his second with a header right before half time to make the score 5-0 at the interval.

Ancaster came into the second half determined to keep the score down, managing to keep AFC at bay for 25 minutes with a stubborn defensive display until Calum Stinson’s through-ball was latched on to by Brettenor whose pace was too much and he smashed home for his hat trick.

The performance was rounded off when returning veteran of the game Lee Smith’s assist found Pierce Stimson who bagged his second and AFC’s seventh to leave the Earlsfield side sitting in second place for the first time this season.

Man of the match was Drew Chadwick.
